SDudio has designed the new home for Groove With Me, a free dance school for girls in East Harlem whose mission is to create community and build the self-confidence and self-respect necessary to making positive choices. The new dance school occupies 7,500 square feet of space incorporating four large dance studios and a variety of support spaces. Significant space is dedicated to the Reception/Waiting area to allow family members to wait comfortably while their children attend classes. Since most classes are scheduled on weekdays after school, an important element in the waiting area is the Homework Counter, dedicated to encouraging Groove With Me students to work on their school assignments before and after classes.

One of the key design objectives for the space was to maximize the lightness and brightness of the Waiting area and the Studios. To do so, SDudio exposed the full height ceilings in these spaces and specified playful LED pendant lights that add a glow and animate. The color palette is a range of periwinkle blues and violets, lending the space a soothing backdrop; a touch of orange is added for accent. A key design element of the space are the photo murals in the common areas which feature the Groove With Me students in urban settings throughout NYC. These murals are meant to celebrate the students; personalize the space and lend a wonderful energy to the interior.
