The Jack and Shirley Silver Hub
Social Services Center

SDudio has designed and renovated a one story 10,000 square foot former billiard hall in Queens to be the home for The Hub, a social services center offering job placement assistance, training and counseling. The Hub is operated by Commonpoint Queens and is funded by the UJA Federation of New York. Both organizations were an active part of the dedicated team whose efforts helped to guide the design direction and whose commitment to creating a dignified and uplifting facility for the community became our inspiration.

SDudio has transformed what was once a nondescript 1976 stucco building into one with a welcoming facade enlivened with brick and industrial detailing that alludes to the mid-century warehouse aesthetic once popular in the boroughs of New York City. The brightly lighted canopy is now a beacon on Queens Boulevard.

Windows and natural light are limited so the interior finish palette is light and bright to compensate. SDudio has exposed the structural deck and trusses in key areas of the center to optimize the sense of openness and further the warehouse aesthetic. A key feature of the center is fully functional commercial kitchen that facilitates the training of clients who are interested in pursuing work in the food service industry.
