SDudio has designed the Brooklyn Hub, a new community based social services center, in the Borough Park neighborhood of Brooklyn.
Occupying 14,000 square feet of interior space with 2,000 square feet of roof deck, the Hub offers the community a wide range of services from career training to legal aid and other safety net benefits from the city and state. A key component of the Hub is a 2,500 square foot Food Pantry facility that preps and provides food packages for families in need. The facility is funded by the UJA Federation of New York and occupied and operated by Met Council, America's largest Jewish charity.
SDudio's design objective was to develop an interior environment that enhances and supports Met Council's mission and the programs offered at the facility. SDudio's design succeeds in providing the community with a welcoming dignified space that lends comfort to those seeking assistance.
The interior is light and bright and takes advantage of the thirteen food high ceilings by introducing a series of LED pendant lights that provide an ambient glow where windows are not abundant. The open workstation area on the first floor boasts a canopy of linear LED lights that incorporate acoustic baffles to help minimize the staff din. To bring natural light into the rear of the first floor, SDudio added a series of large scale skylights.
Custom printed wallcoverings are a feature throughout the Hub, helping to further enliven the space. At the second floor, this custom printed wall covering incorporates images of the iconographic Brooklyn scenes, lending a sense of place to the various meeting rooms and staff lounge. Green walls have been integrated into the design as well to help the urban landscape outside with a sense of serenity inside.
